Exterior painting covers every painted surface on the outside of your home: the siding body, the trim, fascia and soffits, gutters where they're painted, shutters, and the doors. Each of those weathers differently and often needs a different product. Siding takes broad sun and wind. Trim and fascia take water running off the roofline. South and west walls run a harder duty cycle than the shaded north side, which is why a wall facing open sky in Prior Lake or Lakeville fades and chalks years before the sheltered side of the same house does. Here's the single most important thing to understand before you book exterior house painting in Minnesota, and it's the part most out-of-market painters get wrong: exterior paint has a hard temperature floor, and our season is short. After 26 years of Front Range-of-the-metro homes, what we've learned is that a coat applied when the surface is warm during the day but the overnight low drops near freezing will not cure right, and it will not hold, and no space heater fixes that on an open wall. The workable exterior window here runs roughly May through September, when surface temps hold above 50 degrees with mild overnight lows. Push a coat into a cold October night to beat the calendar and you've bought a repaint, not a paint job. We schedule the wash, the dry time, and the finish coats inside that window on purpose. Freeze-thaw is the reason the 2-3 year warranty means something on an exterior up here. It's easy to warrant paint in a climate that never freezes. It's the Minnesota winter that separates a coat that was prepped and timed right from one that wasn't.
Exterior Prep: The Wash, the Scrape, and Why It Decides Everything
Prep is where the exterior job is won or lost, and it's the part you can't see once the paint is on, which is exactly why cheap bids cut it. Every exterior job we run starts with a wash, no exceptions, because paint does not bond to the chalk, algae, and road film that builds up on a house over a couple of seasons. Most of ours begin on our power washing services side for that reason. After the surface is clean and fully dry, we scrape loose and peeling paint back to a stable edge, sand the transitions smooth, recaulk the joints and penetrations that have opened up, and spot-prime bare wood and repaired areas before a single finish coat goes on. Skip the wash or rush the dry time and the best coating on the market still peels on schedule, and it's rarely the paint's fault. This is also where exterior door painting earns its own line: an entry door and its casing take hand contact, slamming, and direct weather, so we finish doors and shutters in a harder enamel rather than the siding-body paint, which chips at the touch points within a year if you use the wrong product.
When You Actually Need a Full Exterior Repaint (and When You Don't)
Not every exterior needs a full repaint, and a straight painter tells you that before quoting the whole house. This is the honest section most exterior painting pages skip. If you painted two or three years ago and you're staring at one faded, sun-beaten wall or a couple of weathered doors, that's a targeted job, not a whole-home repaint, and we'll scope it that way instead of padding the invoice. A full exterior painting home project earns its cost when the scope is genuinely real: siding that's chalking or peeling, bare wood showing through on trim, a color change across the whole envelope, or a refresh before you list.
